The influence of the functional state of the pituitary-thyroid system in the neuropsychological development of young children

Abstract

Insufficient thyroid hormones (THs) in the early childhood can lead to severe impairments in the development of the central nervous system because THs are critical to central nervous system development.
Materials and methods. Target group: 123 children from orphanage. The study was carried out after obtaining the opinion of the ethics commission, the consent of local authorities and guardians. Methods: psychomotor development accession; thyroid status by TSH, TT4, TT3 serum-based measuring (IMA)
Results. One third of surveyed children proved to have minimal thyroid dysfunction (TSH levels over 4.0 mU/L in 27.1±4.1% of cases). The maximum TSH level was 8.6 mU/L. The level of T4 and T3 during the survey was within the reference values. In young children with a severe state of pituitary-thyroid system function, clinical symptoms of nervous system damage were observed significantly more often than in children with an optimal function state. Negative linear correlation by PPMCC between TSH levels and coefficients of neuro&psychological development was detected (ρ=-0.436, p<0.001).
Conclusions. Minimal thyroid dysfunction was detected in 27.1±4.1% children. Reduced activity of the pituitarythyroid axis has a negative impact on the neuropsychological development of the child, reflecting the negative correlation (ρ=-0.436, p<0.001)) between TSH and ratio of mental development.
